I wouldn't say you can readily take it. You certainly can take it though. When I went to take it, I got a runaround from the Training manager, CAA, and testing office. Eventually I found the right test proctor who can administer it.
Be warned, the test hasn't been updated since the 70's and is one of the few paper tests still given. There's not a lot to study except making sure you are good at pattern recognition and can work quickly. The time limit is designed to make it so you don't quite have enough time to finish the test, but that's not really a big deal since you only need a 70-something out of 120 or so to qualify for all the jobs based on it. Computer programming was my 4th choice, with Cyber Surety being my first.
Recruiter suggested I take it because I'm a computer programmer. Funny enough, and he said his battalion?? Had very few programmers. Lack of sleep caused my brain to struggle trying to remember if wrong answers counted against me, and that ended up being my downfall. Somewhat glad I lacked the score too, because I was hoping to transition into networking from my current profession, and 3d0x2 and x3 seemed a golden opportunity to get started:).
As many of you know, I joined the Air Force. Due to limited job positions, I was forced to take a position in the General field temporarily. So anyway, today I went back up to the Boston MEPS to take the EDPT (electronic data processing test, funnily enough NOT on a computer, paper and pencil) to qualify for a computer programming position (Air Force specialty 3C032). I got a 79 on the EDPT and I needed a 71, so now I'm guaranteed that job and I'm leaving for BMT (basic military training) on October 15!
Oh, I didn't FINISH the test, but the guy administering it said he hadn't seen anyone FINISH the whole thing in his 10+ years of giving it. I got sooo damn close but not quite. One final woot and I'm outta here. My scheduled departure date WAS August 27.
August + Texas + BMT!= fun. And my Tech training will be at Keesler AFB, MS or so says military.about.com. I originally went to the MEPS late May.
The ASVAB (the first test you take) is basically like an SAT test, or generally any other aptitude test. The EDPT is a specialized test to see if you qualify for a computer programming position. It's basically a logic test, with some problems that are easier solved with algebra.
There are quite a few different kinds of problems, the hardest being the word math problems, IMO. One of the others are like hard:soft as cold: A, B, C or D type of questions, but they get much harder.
Another has two shapes, you have to figure out the correlation between the two then pick A, B, C or D that would correspond with a third shape they give you. Another type has a set of numbers that you have to figure out the pattern and choose the next number. I think that's about it. It sounds easy but in actuality some of them are very difficult.
To get into 3C032, you have to score a 60 on the ASVAB and 71 on the EDPT, I got a 99 on the ASVAB and 79 on the EDPT. If you're thinking about military service, I'd recommend the Air Force (I haven't actually been IN yet, but from what I've heard/seen so far). And if you ARE thinking about it, go talk to your recruiter. I got lucky and had a very honest recuiter, but keep in mind they are half salesmen. Anything they tell you that sounds too good to be true, is.

What I especially like about the Air Force is the guaranteed job thing. They give you a contract and all. True, if they REALLY want to take you out of that job, they can, but unless you screw up and become disqualified, you are all set. I was under the impression that (for the Air Force) if you scored a 93 or above on your ASVAB that you had your pick of positions; assuming you are qualified. Is the only reason you weren't able to immediately take a specific position because you hadn't taken the EDPT yet? I too got a 99 on my ASVAB. That and a flight physical is all I needed to get what I wanted.
Hey, about your fourth week into BMT there will be a tall, pale redhead marching around in civilian clothes. Try not to laugh at him too much. READ THIS FSCKING POST As a former 491x1, and currently a 3C071, I can only sigh, and shake my head at your foolishness.
I hope you REALLY want to learn, because no matter what your recuiter says, that's what you'll be doing. At the Pentagon, Cheyenne Mountain, or another place I cannot disclose. There will be no Perl, no VB, no C, nothing. You will not be a web developer, write one single web page, be an admin, or even remotely human. You will be a cog in a rapidly shrinking, horribly outdated machine who's sole purpose is to maintain and keep viable a codebase 20+ years old. What you really want is to talk to me, and that right quick. I'm a Communications Computer Systems Operator, a (T)Sgt, and have 10 years in the service, the Air Force.
I can give you the straight poop. DO NOT BE A 'PROGRAMMER'. E-MAIL ME BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!! T Go edit: 98 ASVAB and 92 EDPT (and I finished that fucker).
