Yamaha 4 Hp 2 Stroke Outboard Manual

Hi - I am the proud owner of a Fantasie 19 'Papillon' which came with an old (age unknown but I suspect 10 years +) Yamaha 4HP two stroke with long shaft. Being on a steep learning curve I knew that I needed 2 stroke oil to mix with the fuel - first question to you learned types - will standard Halfords 2 stroke oil do - this is labelled for all domestic/horticultural and gardening two strokes??? Next - any idea where I might find a manual for my outboard?

I suspect the fuel mix needs to be 100:1 but I'd like to check. You can access the owners manual to read online from although the site is really for models sold in the USA. I am unaware of a similar site for the UK! But first you will need to identify the year. You should be able to do that from If necessary look at what you think might be the manual for yours and you will find an illustration of the plate on the transom bracket that gives model/serial numbers and the year letter. Yamaha seem to have managed to continue with 100:1 fuel mixes while the main American makes returned to 50:1 mixes. I think you will find that Yamaha actually recommend 50:1 for the commercial versions of their engines.

If you use 100:1 measure the oil sufficiently accurately to be sure you do not use a thinner mix than 100:1. And yes do use an outboard engine oil to TCW-3 specification. The oils for gardening machinery are formulated for air cooled engines not cooler running water cooled outboards. TCW3 is also biodegradable. Your choice though whether to buy a mineral oil or pay more for a synthetic one. Later: If this is all new to you I strongly suggest that you check and/or replace your gear box oil. Any signs of milkiness indicates water ingress which will need rectifying.

Also if you are not aware when it was last changed consider replacing the water pump impeller, or at the very least keep a good eye on the cooling. I assume yours has a 'pee hole' telltale. Hi and welcome. Correct oil will be an outboard engine gear oil. An oil around SAE 85 or 90 in viscosity to GL5 spec but containing additional corrosion inhibitors to guard against the effects of water ingress. With the engine upright remove both screws to drain the oil.

Stroke

If any signs of water or milkiness then there is probably a seal gone which should be replaced. Refill via the bottom hole until oil flows from the top one, using a squeezable bottle or a pump that fits the hole (Yamaha accessory) Refit the top screw, remove the pump and refit the lower screw. You should use new seals on the drain and level screws.

Water cooled as far as I know and expect. You dont give the year so cannot look anything up. Although strictly for American sold models you may be able to find an owners manual if more recent than 1998. That will tell you the location of the telltale if any. Not a smart idea to put you email address on the forum, suggest you delete it if not too late. Would also have been good etiquette to have started a new topic of your own rather than resurrecting an old one started by someone else.
